Classic California Pinot Noir 54% Off:

chaloneI remember back in the glory days of the Chalone Estate, you had to be a stock holder of Chalone in order to get an allocation of their great Pinot Noirs. When the stock market would have a sharp downward correction, the price of Chalone’s stock would not budge because people wanted to keep their allocation. The Chalone Estate Grown Pinot Noir is so superb and distinctive, the estate was granted its own appellation (AVA) by the government like Napa Valley, Sonoma County etc. Chalone’s problems began when the ownership changed. The new owners made the same mistake that other California wineries made – the line extension. They decided to “brand” the Chalone name and make lesser quality wines with fruit purchased from other regions. The wine buying public for the most part did not understand the difference between the Estate Grown wine and the non-estate wines, and the brand image declined substantially. What once used to be a tightly allocated prestige Pinot Noir is now on close out. The 2009 Chalone Estate Grown Pinot Noir which regularly sells for $36.99 is now on sale for $16.99 each. The 2009 vintage is just now coming into peak drinkability. It is silky and elegant with hints of black cherry, strawberries, and finishes with hints chocolate and toast.
