More Great Buys from Rock Wall

Last week I wrote about a terrific Zinfandel from Kent Rosenblum’s new winery that was deeply discounted called Rock Wall Jesse’s Vineyard Zinfandel. That wine sold out very quickly. This week we have 3 more excellent wines from Rock Wall that are also deeply discounted. The 2011 Rock Wall Rock Hound Red (Reg. $14.99 – Sale $10.99 or $120/cs) is a blend of old vine Syrah from the England-Shaw vineyard just east of Napa (one of California’s very best Syrahs) and Grenache from the Windsor Oaks vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The Rock Hound Red (named after Rosenblum’s Pit Bull) has aromas of coconut, chocolate, and cherry along with black fruit flavors, bacon and white pepper on the finish. It is a serious wine with a whimsical label.
The 2012 Rock Wall Lake County Sauvignon Blanc (Reg. $17.99 – Sale $11.99 or $135/cs) is made with fruit sourced from the excellent Sandy Bend vineyard in Lake County. This vineyard is in the perfect spot in California to grow Sauvignon Blanc. It has clean, pure aromas of white peach, apricot, and citrus along with mangos, pears, and nectarines on the finish. A gentle mineral flavor also comes through on the finish. What a great summer wine!
The 2010 Rock Wall Hendry Vineyard Zinfandel (Reg.$39.99 – Sale $29.99) is from one of the best remaining Zinfandel vineyards in Napa Valley. While many other growers have uprooted their Zin vines in Napa because they can make twice as much money growing Cabernet, the Hendry family (which has been farming this vineyard since the late 1930’s) keeps their precious old Zinfandel vines growing and sells most of it to Rosenblum. While this wine is rich and luscious, it is not just a fruit bomb. It is a complex style of Zinfandel with a blackberry and blueberry fruit profile and an assortment of spices and mineral flavors on the finish.

Spritz Cocktail Special

One of the most popular mixed drinks in the country last summer was the Aperol Spritz.  It is basically a Prosecco sparkling wine mixed with Aperol liqueur.  This refreshing semi-sparkling (frizzante) cocktail is not sweet with a blood orange-like fruit flavor mixed with a delightful herb infused character that stimulates the appetite and lightens the mood.  The Prosecco maker Mionetto decided to bottle the Spritz cocktail pre-mixed and market it in the U.S.A. for $12.99 last summer.  The problem is, it did not arrive here until September, when the Spritz season is over.  The marketing people at Mionetto decided to pull the plug on this idea, and the remaining inventory is being closed-out.  We now can offer the Mionetto Spritz 750ml bottle (6 servings) for $2.99.  You could not mix your own single serving Spritz for that price!  This delicious cocktail is still very fresh and will drink well over the next summer.
