An Unexpected Treasure from Oakville, Napa Valley
The “Treasure Hunter” series of wines are finished wines bought up by the KitFox wine company at a deep discount from wineries that have an excess of wine that they don’t want to sell under their own label. The wines are sold at the discounted price with the Treasure Hunter label under the condition of anonymity for the origin of the wine to protect the brand price point for the winery that made the wine. I recently tasted the 2011 Treasure Hunter The Doppio Petit Verdot ($21.99) from the pricey Oakville district of Napa Valley and was quite impressed. There is an assortment of blackberry, pomegranate, and black-current fruit flavors along with an earthy, mineral, and slightly smoky finish to this wine. The Petit Verdot grape variety is usually blended into Cabernet Sauvignon to add depth, body, and intensity to the wine. It normally is not bottled as a stand-alone grape variety like this one – in fact, the only Oakville winery that I knew of that sold a varietal Petit Verdot was Gargiulo which sold for $65 a bottle. I remember tasting the Gargiulo P.V. at The Taste of Oakville a few years back, and the Treasure Hunter The Doppio reminds me of that wine. Gargioulo did not release a Petit Verdot in 2011. Perhaps it is just a coincident, but that is my guess as to the origin of this Treasure Hunter wine. There is only a small amount of this wine available. The Spring Rose` Wines Have Arrived – Before the Spring Weather
The 2013 vintage Rose` wines from the South of France that I have tasted so far have been beautiful! I can’t say the same thing for the weather we have been having, however. When the thermometer finally gets over 800, a nice dry Rose` is very enjoyable and fun to drink. The 2013 Chateau Miraval Cotes de Provence Rose`($22.99ea. or $250/cs-91 points Decanter) is fuller-bodied than most Provence Rose` but still soft and elegant with nice melon, strawberry, and tangerine flavors. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, owners of Chateau Miraval, leave the winemaking for this terrific Rose` up to the expert hands of the Perrin Family, which have just been named Winemakers of the Year by Decanter Magazine. Miraval is as good as Rose` gets in my opinion.
The 2013 Commanderie de la Bargemone Coteaux d’Aix en Provence Rose` ($14.99) is soft, light and delicate with hints of peach and strawberry fruit flavors. The 2013 Saint Roch Les Vignes Cotes de Provence Rose` ($12.99) is an organically produced wine with a significant amount of the Cinsault grape variety in the blend, which adds some body and length of finish to the wine. It has more cranberry and cherry fruit flavors along with the soft peach and strawberry fruit. If you would like to reserve any of these wines, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
