Reliable High Quality Chianti for Under $20

Whenever I see Frescobaldi Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva on a restaurant wine list when I am ordering a pasta dish, I order it. It is always good and it is always reasonably priced. The 2010 vintage in Tuscany (where Chianti is made) was especially good, the best since 1985. The 2010 Frescobaldi Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva ($19.99 – 92 points Wine Spectator) is now in stock. It is made with mostly the Sangiovese grape variety, which is perfect with any dish that has tomato, herbs, and cheese. I highly recommend it. If you would like to reserve a case of this wine for the special price of $210, please contact me at

Buttery Chardonnay for Under $20
Consumer taste in Chardonnay differ sharply. They either like the crisp, un-oaked style or the buttery, oaky style I have found. The problem with the buttery, oaky style is, that flavor comes at a higher price. A small oak barrel used to make that style costs over $1000 and only fits about 5 cases worth of wine in it. Also, it will only impart that flavor for one or two vintages. After that, you have to buy another barrel. That is why it is rare to find the buttery style Chardonnay under $20. The 2012 Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay ($18.99 – 90 points Wine Enthusiast) is one of the rare examples of buttery Chardonnay for under $20. It also has the benefit of a great acid structure and balance to integrate all of the complex flavors in this Chardonnay. If you are a fan of this style, I highly recommend it. If you would like to reserve a case for the special price of $210, please contact me at

Complex & Affordable White Bordeaux
The Sirius Bordeaux Blanc is made by the wine negotiant firm Maison Sichel. I have been quite impressed by this white Bordeaux blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon over the years. I spoke with someone from Maison Sichel about this wine over a glass of it a few years ago. I said that the complexity of this wine reminds me of a $50 Pessac-Leognan (a sub-region of Bordeaux known for the best white wines of the region). He told me that was because there is a lot of wine from Chateau Carbonnieux Pessac-Leognan blended into it. Chateau Carbonnieux happens to be one of my favorite white Bordeaux wines, so that explains why I like it so much. Now that Chateau Carbonnieux has gotten so expensive, I don’t have it very often, but since the 2012 Sirius Bordeaux Blanc ($12.99 – 92 points Wine Enthusiast & Gold Medal @ 2013 Bordeaux competition) is so affordable, you can have it as a daily drinker. Now we just need some warm weather to enjoy it with.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about this terrific Zinfandel close-out deal. We sold out of our initial shipment right away. We will receive our second and final shipment of Blue Groove Zinfandel on Wednesday morning. If you would like to reserve some, please contact me at Here is a re-print of the article I wrote earlier this month:
Sleek, Spicy Lodi Zinfandel 50% Off
The artist and winemaker Salvatore Principe made a delicious special edition Zinfandel named after one of his prints called “Blue Groove” from fruit harvested in the Lodi region of California. It has a nice dark plum and blackberry fruit character along with a cocoa powder and spice box finish. Principe made Blue Groove Zinfandel (Reg. $13.99) as an exclusive label for a chain of wine shops in the Southeast. That chain did not take all of its original commitment, and it is now on close-out at a deeply discounted price. We now are offering the 2010 Blue Groove Lodi Zinfandel for the special price of $6.99 each or $78 per case. If you like a good Zin with your pasta or pizza, this would be a great choice at a bargain price. If you would like to reserve a case, please contact me at
