One of Napa’s Best Kept Secrets

The Oakville district of Napa Valley has some of the most sought after Cabernets of the entire region – most of which have long since crossed the $100 per bottle mark.  Names like Screaming EagleHarlan, and Opus One come to mind when you think of the Oakville district of Napa.  The Oakville Cabs have intensity of fruit concentration, complexity, and elegance all at the same time.  The tiny, family owned Liparita winery has been around since 1880.  They are only make enough wine to be distributed in a few states, so you may not have heard of them.  The 2009 Liparita Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon ($59.99 – 93 points Wine Enthusiast) is a delicious expression of the Oakville appellation, and at a much more affordable price than many of its famous neighbors.  I think it is Napa Valley’s best kept secrets.  If you have a Cabernet lover on your Christmas list, this would make a great gift.  If you would like to reserve some Liparita Oakville, please contact me at drusso@gbrusso.com.

One of Bordeaux’s Best Kept Secrets

When I visited Bordeaux to taste the premiere of the great 2010 vintage Saint-Emilions, I got to taste my absolute favorite Premiere Grand Cru Classe` including Chateau Angelus (which is now over $400/bottle) and Chateau Ausone (which is now over $1000/bottle).  While I loved these wines, they are no longer an affordable luxury but now insanely expensive.  After tasting these gems, I tasted a Grand Cru Classe` (a notch down from Premiere Grand Cru Classe` in the Saint-Emilion pecking order) called Chateau Monbousquet ($71.99 – 95 points Wine Spectator) and it shockingly held its own with the big dogs.  The remarkable 2010 vintage in Bordeaux (the best since 1961) is more open and accessible than its’ youth, so you can enjoy this wine now (with 1-2 hours of aeration) and it will continue to improve in the cellar for up to 20 years!  I highly recommend this one for yourself or the Bordeaux lover on your Christmas list.  If you would like to reserve some Chateau Monbousquet, please contact me at drusso@gbrusso.com.
